What we do

Bats leave at dusk to feed. A one-way device on the main hole lets them out but won't let them back in, and the other gaps get sealed while it's up.

Chart of North Carolina bat maternity season, May 1 to July 31, when bat exclusion is not allowed

When bats can and can't be moved.

North Carolina's bat maternity season runs May 1 through July 31. During those months, bats can't be evicted because the pups can't fly yet, per the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.

That makes fall the time to get them out, and in October big brown bats may roost in attics before they migrate, per our WNC pest calendar. Found them in summer? We'll keep them out of your living space and set a firm date on or after August 1.

Signs you've got them:

  • Chittering behind the gable at dusk
  • Droppings near the soffit or under an attic vent
  • A bat in the house with no idea how it got in

Bat exclusion, done the humane way.

We don't trap or poison bats, and NC law protects them. Dusty finds the main way in and puts a one-way device on it, so bats can fly out at night but can't get back in.

The device stays up for several nights, because not every bat goes out to feed every night. Once they're gone, the opening gets sealed for good with hardware cloth or flashing.

He also checks the other spots bats use on WNC homes, like gable vents, soffits, and ridge vents. Call (828) 736-1350 and tell him where you're seeing them.

Attic cleanup and sanitizing on a Western NC wildlife job

Bat guano cleanup after they're gone.

Bat droppings aren't something to sweep up yourself. Per the CDC, histoplasmosis comes from breathing in spores of a fungus that spreads in bat and bird droppings.

We handle that part, so guano and soiled insulation get bagged and hauled out before the framing gets sanitized. You get before and after photos on your phone before we leave.

Damage to insulation or the roofline? We write up the paperwork most insurance carriers ask for, though we can't promise how a claim turns out.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Bats in the attic, straight answers.

How much does bat removal cost?
Every bat job is quoted after a free inspection, because a few bats behind one gable vent aren't the same job as a colony in the attic. The quote you sign is the number you pay. Call (828) 736-1350 and Dusty can give you a ballpark over the phone.
Can you get bats out in the summer?
Not from May 1 through July 31, which is NC's bat maternity season. During those months we can inspect, keep bats out of your living space, and set a firm date for the exclusion on or after August 1.
Do you kill the bats?
No. Bats are protected in North Carolina, so they leave on their own through a one-way device. We don't use poison or kill traps.
How fast can you get out here?
Call (828) 736-1350 anytime. We're open 24/7 for free quotes, and a bat in the living space gets bumped to the front of the line.
What if the bats come back?
If they get back in through a spot we sealed, the Marshal's Shield covers it. Call (828) 736-1350 and Dusty comes back and fixes it free.
Do I need a contract?
No. You pay for the job you approved, and that's it.
Are you licensed in North Carolina?
Yes. Dusty Allen holds NC Structural Pest Control License #026-41582, and Pest Marshals of Asheville and WNC is fully insured. Bat jobs are scheduled around the NC Wildlife Resources Commission maternity season.
